Navigate the Route: Australia PR Points Framework

Securing permanent residency in Australia requires a strategic approach. Evaluate your current score standing and prepare for upcoming structural changes to the migration points framework.

Target Score Benchmark

Actual invitation scores fluctuate dynamically based on your chosen professional ANZSCO occupation code.

The Mechanics of Skilled Migration

The Australian skilled migration system functions as a merit-based selection tool, enabling the Department of Home Affairs to prioritize and invite top-tier global talent.

How the System Operates

Applicants are objectively assessed and ranked on structural human capital factors. Your age, professional language proficiency, employment background, and academic credentials determine your position in the selection pool.

Strategic Points Reality

  • Beyond the Minimums: Submitting an application requires an official baseline of 65 points, but the actual scores required to secure an invitation are notably higher.
  • Competitive Sectors: Industries with high applicant volume—such as technology, engineering, and healthcare—frequently see invitation cut-offs scaling between 85 and 110+ points.

Current Matrix vs. Proposed Policy Reforms

Compare the active point allocation framework against the structural changes recommended by the Grattan Institute policy review.

Assessment Category Active DHA Framework Proposed Grattan Reform Model
Age Allocation Awards maximum point values to applicants within the 25–32 age range. Introduces steeper points scaling to heavily favor younger professionals at the start of their careers.
English Language Distributes points across three distinct tiers: Competent (0), Proficient (10), and Superior (20). Shifts weight heavily toward applicants demonstrating a flawless, Superior command of the language.
Domestic Earnings Does not factor local Australian salary metrics or income levels into the points total. Introduces significant point bonuses linked directly to high domestic wage thresholds.
Partner Attributes Provides set bonus options for a partner's skills assessment or demonstrated English capability. Expands scoring tiers to give greater recognition to high-earning or highly qualified spouses.
Bonus Pathways Grants points for regional study pathways, community languages, and Professional Year (PY) completion. Recommends removing points for basic study streams and completely eliminating the Professional Year bonus.

Essential Program FAQ

Get straightforward answers regarding current compliance rules, timeline milestones, and visa subclass requirements.

What is the minimum score required to lodge an application?
The baseline threshold to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in the SkillSelect system is 65 points. However, entering the pool at this score does not guarantee selection. High-demand professionals in IT, engineering, and medical fields generally need to achieve scores between 85 and 95+ points to safely receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
When are my age-related points officially locked in?
Your age points are set at the exact moment you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), rather than when you submit your initial Expression of Interest (EOI). If you cross into an older age bracket while waiting in the SkillSelect queue, your profile score will automatically recalculate downwards to match the new bracket.
Am I allowed to combine overseas and Australian professional experience?
Yes. You can claim points for both international and Australian employment concurrently, provided the experience is formally verified, paid, covers at least 20 hours per week, and relates closely to your nominated occupation. Note that the maximum combined cap for all work experience is strictly limited to 20 points.
How can a spouse or partner increase my application's score?
A partner can add valuable points to your file: you can claim 10 points if they hold a valid skills assessment alongside competent English; 5 points if they lack the skills assessment but meet competent English levels; or 10 points automatically if you apply as a single applicant.
Which visa subclasses are governed by this points test framework?
The General Skilled Migration points test strictly decides invitation rankings for three primary visa streams: the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189), the state-nominated Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190), and the regional provisional pathway known as the Skilled Work Regional Visa (Subclass 491).
